Introduction

This section covers the benefits and risks of metaxalone (generic Skelaxin®). If you are prescribed this medication, please review this section carefully, along with reviewing the manufacturer pamphlet(s) that accompany the medication. The manufacturer pamphlet(s) contain complete information on drug interactions, risks and side effects, and other important information that you should understand before starting treatment.

Background

Metaxalone is a muscle relaxant which is effective for pain in the lower back, upper back, and neck area. It’s particularly useful for treating acute pain (say, from injuries) and spasms, as well as for severe chronic pain that does not respond to NSAID medications. You should likely start off by taking the medication at night to see how you respond, as sedation is a common side effect.
